SUMMARY:Grand Re-Opening of Historic Club Ebony
DESCRIPTION:Buy TicketsSUSAN TEDESCHI TO HEADLINE INDIANOLA’S CLUB EBONY GRAND REOPENING  \nINDIANOLA\, Miss. – An artist who felt a strong connection to B.B. King—and whose guitar skills King greatly admired—will be the headliner for the grand reopening of Indianola’s historic Club Ebony on June 1-3\, 2023. Susan Tedeschi and her husband\, Derek Trucks\, also performed in 2021 at the opening of the B.B. King Museum and Interpretive Center’s Expansion and Memorial Courtyard to pay homage to one of their music mentors.  \nThis nightclub that cemented Indianola as a major entertainment hub in the 1940s\, ’50s and ’60s has undergone a complete renovation and will be ready to welcome visitors and musicians back after being closed for repair for more than a year. As a stop on the “Chitlin’ Circuit\,” Club Ebony had legendary acts including Ray Charles\, Count Basie\, Bobby Bland\, Little Milton\, Albert King\, James Brown\, Ike Turner\, Howlin’ Wolf\, Tyrone Davis\, Bobby Rush and many more. It was also the place where B.B. King played to standing-room-only crowds after his popular annual homecoming concerts in Indianola.  \nKing bought the club in 2008 after the retirement of Mary Shepard\, its previous owner. In 2012\, he donated it to the museum that bears his name\, hoping that its history could be preserved and that it could add an authentic extension to the exhibits as well as offer another much-needed music venue. \nPlanned events at Club Ebony include a ribbon cutting on June 1st at 10 a.m.\, with the Big Time Rhythm & Blues Band performing that evening at 7 p.m. On Friday\, June 2nd\, The Neal Brothers (Lil Ray and Kenny Neal) and Mr. Sipp will take the stage at 7 p.m. The Neal Brothers honed their craft in Louisiana\, hanging around the likes of Buddy Guy and Harpo Slim. Mr. Sipp is a Mississippi native who was also influenced by B.B. King\, taking up guitar at age six. He has been the winner of the International Blues Challenge\, the Bobby Rush Entertainer of the Year award and BMA’s Best New Artist Album. On Saturday\, June 3rd\, Tony Coleman’s Silent Partners Band will open and play a few numbers with Susan Tedeschi. The Silent Partners’  \nindividual band members have resumes of band stints with B.B. King\, Albert King\, Bobby Blue Bland\, Johnnie Taylor\, Otis Clay\, Denise LaSalle and a host of other blues heavyweights. \nTedeschi is a multiple GRAMMY® Award nominee for Best Contemporary Blues Album and GRAMMY winner for Best Blues Album in 2012 with Tedeschi Trucks Band. In 2014\, she won the Blues Music Award for Contemporary Female Blues Artist of the Year. Tedeschi had an early introduction to blues\, listening to the music of Mississippi John Hurt and Lightnin’ Hopkins. She began playing guitar and eventually opened for King\, Buddy Guy and other blues legends.  \nIn 2016\, Tedeschi\, along with Trucks and other acclaimed guitarists\, performed at “Icon: The Life and Legacy of B.B. King” at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills. They also performed with King in 2010 at Eric Clapton’s Guitar Crossroads Festival in Illinois\, in 2011 at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland\, and in 2012 at the Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado. \n“We are so excited about being able to not only save Club Ebony\, but to bring it back in a manner that preserves its “Chitlin’ Circuit” heritage\, but blends all the conveniences of a modern club. We have made the club fully ADA compliant and added interpretive elements that outline the club’s history and all the great performers who once graced the stage\,” said B.B. King Museum Director Malika Polk-Lee. \nRobert Terrell\, the museum’s deputy director said\, “I think guests will really be impressed with the club. We have put the stage back in its original location on the west end of the building and have added a sound booth to provide a better experience for artists and patrons alike. We added additional exits and have installed a complete sprinkler system to ensure the safety of our guests. There’s a lot of history here\, and we are excited about sharing it.” \nTickets for the shows are available on EventBrite. (https://www.eventbrite.com/cc/grand-re-opening-of-historic-club-ebony-2158039)

SUMMARY:Black Legacy Project launches in the Mississippi Delta
DESCRIPTION:Black Legacy Project launches in the Mississippi Delta February 22 – 28\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClarksdale – Music in Common announces the MS Delta launch of The Black Legacy Project\, a musical celebration of Black history to advance racial solidarity\, equity\, and belonging. The Black LP is a national project produced in partnership with community stakeholders at the local level.  As it travels the country\, the Black LP brings together Black and White artists and artists of ALL backgrounds to record present day interpretations of songs central to the Black American experience and compose originals relevant to the pressing calls for change of our time. Community roundtable discussions help inform how these songs are interpreted and written. \n\n\nAfter more than a year of development in the wake of the killings of Breonna Taylor\, Ahmaud Arbery\, and George Floyd\, The Black Legacy Project kicked off in September 2021 in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts. Since then the Project has traveled to Los Angeles\, the Ozarks of northwest Arkansas\, and Denver. In 2023\, it will launch in  Atlanta\, the Mississippi Delta\, and Boise\, hitting the Delta February 22 – 28 with events and programs for musicians and non-musicians alike. \n\n\nIn each community the Black LP travels to\, songs addressing a theme connected to the local community are reimagined and composed. The selected theme for the Delta is “I Am the Blues”\, which explores the origins of Blues music and its roots in the Black American experience\, especially of those living in the Mississippi Delta. The project will unpack the enormous contributions of Black musicians to the American musical landscape via the blues\, often overlooked and at times appropriated. Analysis of the songs\, “I Am the Blues ” by Muddy Waters and “Poor Man’s Blues” by Bessie Smith\, will foster a greater understanding of these contributions and the crediting of them to Black artists. Community members will analyze the lyrics of these songs in round table discussions to help inform how they are musically reinterpreted by local musicians. The roundtable will take place on Wednesday February 22nd at 7PM. Registration is required. Location will be disclosed at that time. \n\n\nFollowing the roundtable discussion\, local artists will spend several days working up new arrangements of these songs as well as composing an original. The songs will be recorded and the project will culminate with two free performances on February 27th at the Grammy Museum in Cleveland and on February 28th at the BB King Museum in Indianola. Both events\, which also include a documentary screening of the pilot episode of the Black LP docuseries and a community conversation\,  start at 7PM and are free and open to all. Tickets can be reserved at https://www.theblacklegacyproject.org/events. \n\n\n“I’m incredibly excited to come on as a musical co-director of this project”\, states Alice Hasen\, one of four local artists that will serve as musical co-directors for the project in the Delta. Other musical co-directors include Edna Nicole\, Keith Johnson\, and Tricia Walker. Musicians interested in performing or recording on the project can audition online. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Black Legacy Project is funded  by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Center for Prevention Programs and Partnerships (opportunity number DHS-22-TTP-132-00-01) and a long list of national and local partners. The Black LP is produced by Music in Common\, an Atlanta-based nonprofit that strengthens\, empowers\, and connects communities through the universal language of music. Since 2005\, Music In Common has directly served thousands of people in more than 300 communities across the globe and across religious\, ethnic\, cultural\, and racial axes. The organization was founded by singer-songwriter and producer Todd Mack in response to the murder of his friend and bandmate\, Daniel Pearl\, the Wall St. Journal reporter abducted by terrorists in Pakistan in 2002.
